Service Description

In this workshop we’ll be making a colourful, seamless felt project using a “resist” (barrier between layers of felt). The techniques learned in this class will provide you with a strong foundation for exploring felt-making further on your own. We’ll be covering: • A brief overview of how to make felt; • How to use resists to create hollow objects such as purses, bags and other vessels; • How to create beautifully complex colours by layering different colours of wool; • How to use shibori tying to create surface relief and reveal underlying layers of colour (for more experienced felters). Some experience with wet-felting will be helpful, but beginners will be able to work at their own pace by choosing a less complex project. We’ll work through the steps of completing the project together, but there will be lots of opportunity to use your own creativity to make a uniquely personal object. The instructor, will bring all the wool, fibre, upholstery thread, yarn, and resist material that you will need. Please bring: Notebook and pen, scissors, waterproof measuring tape or ruler, two bath towels (approximately 36 X 20 inches at least), a small tea towel, bar of soap, basin or bowl (shoe box size is good), large eyed sewing needle. If you have them, please bring wet-felting tools – rolling noodle (approx 20 inches), watering bulb (disposable plastic water bottle (500-700 ml) with small holes punched in lid will work), and a small cheese grater for grating soap. We’ll be using 24 inch wide bubble wrap (two 2X2 ft pieces – bubbles approximately 1 cm in diameter) - please bring it if you have your own supply. Fay will bring bubble wrap, rolling noodles, and felting supplies for those who need them. Please note: this workshop may be postponed or cancelled due to inclement weather – the instructor will be travelling from Cochrane. Be sure to check your email the morning of the workshop. This course is intended for adults. Some experience is advantageous for the full project but beginners can create a simple version.
